LET'S GET MUDDY! THE BENEFITS OF RASUL

Mud - we love the stuff. And Rasul mud is the best of the bunch.

When we discovered the incredibly pure, hand-harvested Austrian mud, we knew we were onto something special. We've now been selling the same amazing Rasul mud to spas for a decade, and our mud face masks are available to buy online too.

So we thought it's time to share our deepest, darkest, muddiest secrets...

WHAT IS A RASUL TREATMENT?

A lot of people haven't heard of Rasul - and if you don't know what it is, you need to get to know it.

One of our favourite spa experiences, the Rasul treatment is an ancient Arabic bathing ritual that dates backs hundreds of years, combining heat and steam to draw our impurities and remove dead skin cells. And now it's become a must-have for spas all over the world.

A Rasul treatment uses mineral-rich mud along with heat and steam to target all five senses. Light and sound effects are used within the mosaic-tiled chambers, big enough for groups of two to four. It's a super-fun treatment that can get very mucky! There's no therapist so you get down and dirty yourself, and doing it in pairs or groups is the best way to ensure you're getting mud on those hard-to-reach areas.

WHAT'S SO GOOD ABOUT RASUL MUD?

We hand-harvest our Rasul muds from the Austrian Alps. The weight and pressure of the glaciers finely grinds the mud to a super-soft powder, filtered by pure glacial ice and packed with the purest, most detoxing elements of the mountain.

A finely-ground mineral dust, it's rich in quartz and mica which is incredible for the skin.

Bentonite (clay) - amazing for drawing toxins from the body. Clay has an abundance of nutrients and minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sodium, copper, iron and potassium. Because of clay’s special ability to act as an antibiotic treatment when applied topically to the skin, it can help calm skin infections and speed up healing time.

Mica - a natural mineral which helps improve the feel of your skin.

Silica - great for both skin and hair. It aids in skin regeneration and makes hair strong and soft by strengthening the connective tissue, encouraging growth.

Kaolin - amazing for deeply cleansing and refining pores and skin structure. Kaolin will help banish acne, blackheads and pimples, as well as purifying and revitalizing to boost skin cell renewal.

HOW TO RASUL

After showering, exfoliate!  Exfoliating will remove dead skin cells to reveal fresh, new skin. This will help the minerals and nutrients in the mud get to work and sink deep into the skin. Check out our blog on the benefits of exfoliation to discover more.

If you have super dry skin or patches, try an oily scrub such as the Yuzu, Pink Beets & Watermelon Body Scrub. For normal skin types, we recommend a drier salt scrub before a Rasul - try our Fig & Vanilla Salted Body Crush.

Grab a couple of big scoops of mud and slap it on your chosen body part. Don't be afraid of making a mess - have fun with it! Leave the mud on for 15-20 minutes to work its magic, while you sit back and relax in the steam chamber.

There are a variety of different naturally coloured muds for use in the Rasul - as a rule of thumb, the lighter the mud, the higher up the body it goes.

White mud is best for face and hair, yellow mud for arms and chest,  blue mud for back and torso, grey mud for bums and thighs, dark mud for lower legs and feet.

The darker the mud, the thicker the gradient and grittier it is.

As you relax and breathe in the steam, the heat will work in tandem with the mud to draw toxins, impurities, grime and excess oil from the face and body. It will work to nourish and strengthen the hair. After a while the Rasul mud will start to dry a little - when it looks like it's cracking, you're cooked!

Shower yourself down in cool water to remove the mud. Your skin will feel silky smooth and unbelievably soft.

It's an unusual experience - but it's good fun, and will leave you feeling incredible.

RECREATE A RASUL AT HOME

It's muddy and messy, but it's a lot of fun. Here's how to recreate a top-to-toe home spa Rasul treatment.

You'll need mud, body scrub, face polish, body wash, shampoo and oils - we've linked our favourites throughout.

Step 1: Close the windows and run steaming hot bath - you can recreate the steam of a Rasul chamber in your own bathroom!

DISCLAIMER: if you're not used to intense heat or have medical issues, skip this step - better to be safe than sorry.

Step 2: Polish the face with a natural, soothing exfoliation - try the Bamboo Intense Facial Polish. Follow with an all-over body scrub, like our best-selling Lime & Lemongrass Invigorating Salt Scrub.

Rinse off the scrub, but please be careful - it can get slippery.

Step 3: Get muddy! You'll need a couple of the sachets of Rasul Mud Mask if you're going full body. Mix into a paste and slather everywhere - hair, face, body and feet. Leave for 15-20 mins to start to dry on skin and draw out toxins.

If you don't fancy slathering, you can soak. Pour 30g dry Rasul mud into a warm bath, and soak for 20-30 mins. It'll still work in the same way!

Our Rasul mud is completely pure with no added chemicals or other nasties, so it's perfect for all skin types.

When you're done, rinse off and wash - try our Yuzu Oil & Marjoram Body Wash, and Fig & Vanilla Shampoo & Conditioner.

Step 4: Get oily! Mud is super detoxing, so it can leave skin feeling a little parched.

Choose a 100 Percent Pure Oil for your face - the skin-soothing Organic Rosehip Oil is fab for all skin types.

For the body we love Sensitive Body Oil - it's loaded with raspberry seed oil, antibacterial frankincense, basil, rosehip, geranium, cedarwood and patchouli, so massage into skin from neck to toe to soothe, protect and hydrate.
